Missouri Flat Bike Trail Opens in El Dorado County
The Missouri Flat bike trail officially opened on January 12 in El Dorado County. The trail connects the Missouri Flat Interchange and the Placerville Drive interchange over the Weber Creek Canyon. The new trail connects the two major commercial areas on either side of the creek for the first time with bicycle infrastructure.
The pathway is part of the Missouri Flat Interchange project that began in 2010 and was intentionally designed to accommodate both pedestrian and bicycle traffic. While the bicycle and pedestrian improvements were intended to be included in the initial interchange work construction cost increases limited the bike/ped improvements.
The project was able to be completed due to planning and coordination between El Dorado County, El Dorado County Transportation Commission and Caltrans District 3. The County was able to issue additional funding to design the cantilevered creek crossing to keep the bike/ped portion in play. Because the design work was completed the project was able to capture American and Reinvestment Act funding to finish the bicycle and pedestrian path portion of the improvements.
