Regional Emergency Preparedness Strategy
The Sacramento region has been faced with dangerous natural hazards and fires over the last few years. To effectively address these dangers, it is essential to have a flexible plan for dealing with emergencies and to coordinate mitigation efforts among different authorities.
SACOG has developed a Sacramento Regional Emergency Preparedness Strategy to address this need. By approaching this strategy through the lens of incorporating the transportation system, specifically transit assets and operators, the following goals have been outlined:
- Develop a clear vision for how transit assets and operators are deployed in evacuation situations in the Sacramento region.
- Strengthen existing relationships between regional transit operators and emergency management personnel to facilitate efficient evacuations using transit assets.
- Assess which communities or populations may need evacuation assistance from regional transit operators.
- Provide resources and tools for transit operators and regional emergency response managers to assist them in improving emergency preparedness and the recommendations of the Strategy.
The Sacramento Regional Emergency Preparedness Strategy aims to complement existing emergency management plans by allowing transit agencies to better integrate into the region’s existing emergency management practices.
In effect, SACOG and partners will utilize the following principles to ensure that the strategy is implemented successfully:
- Strive for a holistic regional perspective while honoring and respecting each partner’s autonomy.
- Ensure equity and fairness in adopting regional policies, plans, tactics, techniques, procedures, etc.
- Build upon existing strengths and ensure regional capability investments are maintained.
