Finding the Missing Middle: Responding to the Demand for Walkable Living, Daniel Parolek – September 19, 2019
On September 19 2019, the Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) and Opticos Design collaborated on a discussion on Missing Middle Housing.
Missing Middle Housing is a range of multi-unit or clustered housing types that help meet the growing demand for walkable urban living. Examples include duplexes, fourplexes, bungalow courts, and mansion apartments that are not bigger than a large house and are compatible in scale with detached single-family homes.
These dwelling units provide diverse housing choices and generate enough density to support transit and locally-serving commercial amenities. They are integrated throughout most walkable pre-1940s neighborhoods and are often integrated into blocks with primarily single-family homes. Although a common feature in pre-war building stocks, these housing types have become much less common. This event will look at ways to bring missing middle housing back.
Daniel Parolek, founder of Opticos Design, is the guest speaker. Daniel created the concept “Missing Middle Housing” and is a nationally recognized thought leader in architecture, design and urban planning. He has been a leading practitioner of Form-Based Coding, a revolutionary new approach to development regulation and design.
