The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced awards for the 2025–26 Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant Awards in early July. A total of seven Sacramento region projects were awarded $3.2 million in transportation investment. Projects range from active transportation and transit to roadway resiliency, to electric vehicle infrastructure planning.
One of the projects on the list includes $440,000 to Yuba County to create a Climate Action and Adaptation Plan. This plan has been on the top of the county’s list, according to Daniel Peterson, co-owner of Peterson Consulting Advantage and former public works director for the county who wrote the grant application. “The biggest danger to the county is severe weather, flood, and wildfire,” shared Peterson.
Many Yuba County residents still remember floods that devastated communities, most recently in 1997, during huge storms that impacted most of the state and resulted in a levee break. In addition, wildfires pose significant risk with some communities relying on a single road or highway in case an evacuation is needed.
The plan will identify vulnerabilities, provide adaptation strategies, and give leaders and partners a toolbox they can use to replace system infrastructure and keep up with the changes in climate.
