Congratulations to the Youth Leadership Academy Class of 2025!

Post Date:06/26/2025

Students from across the Sacramento region gathered to celebrate their recent graduation from the 2025 Youth Leadership Academy (YLA). These emerging leaders heard from a number of regional leaders and received recognition for months of hard work developing their leadership skills and learning how they can impact the future of their communities. This year marks the seventh cohort, totaling to more than 250 alumni from the program.

To join in the celebration, several presenters shared their personal stories to help inspire students as they continue their leadership journeys.

Congressman Ami Bera shared his personal story as a child of immigrants and his path to public service, noting how much can shift in one generation, and encouraged students to continue their individual leadership journeys.

Sacramento City Unified School District Trustee Chinua Rhodes challenged students to consider various paths of community leadership, beyond high profile public offices.

And SMUD Director Gregg Fishman reflected on the power and strength that comes from the diversity of community throughout the region. He also highlighted why SMUD continues to be a funder and strong supporter of the program.

After students received their certificates, they heard from a YLA alumni panel, some in college or having just graduated from college. Panelists provided insight into what they have learned through YLA and the connections they've made through the program, and offered advice to students as they consider their future careers.

Each year, YLA students have an opportunity to learn about the various roles in local government and how working together across sectors is important to make things happen. Students get the opportunity to participate in workshops and field trips where they meet directly with leaders, explore careers in public service, and gain valuable insights into how communities work. Congratulations to all the 2025 YLA graduates!
