One of the projects to receive ATP funding is the City of West Sacramento’s Sidewalks and Transportation Equity Program (STEP), which focuses on providing sidewalks to neighborhoods that currently have none. The concept seems simple, but for these neighborhoods built before the city incorporated in 1987, getting out of the road and onto sidewalks will significantly improve how residents get around.

According to the City of West Sacramento’s website, the STEP plan will provide 21 miles of new sidewalk in neighborhoods where residents rely on walking for daily trips most often.  Stephanie Chhan, senior transportation planner with the City of West Sacramento, explains that this project is at the core of the city’s transportation goals. “If someone doesn’t feel comfortable walking out of their house or in their neighborhood,” shared Chhan, “they wouldn’t feel comfortable using active transportation.” Sidewalk connections provide better connections to active transportation investments happening across the city.

Regional ATP award recipients include:

  • $2 million to the City of West Sacramento for their Sidewalks and Transportation Equity Program Implementation Project.
  • $1.9 million to the City of Sacramento for their Northgate Boulevard Complete Streets Project.
  • $450,000 to Sacramento County for their Whitney Avenue Road Diet and Multimodal Improvements project.
  • $369,000 to Yolo County for their SR 128/I-505 Interchange/Russell Boulevard Transportation Program.
