Leaders, elected officials, and supporters braved rain and wind to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Franklin Boulevard Complete Streets Project on Thursday, March 27, 2025. The project has been in the works for more than a decade and will transform about 1.5 miles of Franklin Boulevard in Sacramento to add bike lanes, reduce car lanes, and improve safety for everyone traveling along the corridor.
The City of Sacramento and the Franklin Boulevard Business District have been working together for many years to create a plan to reconnect this isolated corridor. Through community-driven engagement efforts, the redesign of the boulevard truly is a collaborative effort. The advocacy efforts around street improvements in this area were one of the inspirations for SACOG’s own Engage, Empower, Implement regional funding program.
City of Sacramento Councilmember and SACOG Board Member Caity Maple reflected on how the improvements to Franklin Boulevard will make streets safer for families and provide more welcoming surroundings for businesses. The area is full of businesses that have been part of the fabric of Sacramento for decades.
Throughout the project’s history, the Franklin Boulevard Complete Streets Project has received more than $11.2 million to help attain construction today. We look forward to riding our bikes and exploring along the new boulevard when construction is completed in 2026.
