Sacramento County celebrated a big step toward a more vibrant Arden Way corridor on February 20, 2025, with the groundbreaking for the Arden Way Complete Streets—Phase 1 Project. Local officials, community members, and transportation leaders gathered to break ground on a project that will transform a 0.5-mile section of Arden Way between Morse Avenue and Watt Avenue, bringing long-awaited improvements for bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit users. Improvements will eventually extend 1.7 miles from Howe to Watt Avenue.

The project, which stems from the Arden Way Complete Streets Master Plan, aims to revitalize the corridor by adding physically separated bike lanes, widened sidewalks, new landscaping, improved transit facilities, and upgraded pedestrian crossings. These enhancements will make Arden Way safer and more accessible for all travelers.

During the groundbreaking, Sacramento County Supervisor and SACOG Board Member Rich Desmond emphasized that the project directly responds to community needs, particularly for the many students and refugee families who rely on walking, biking, and transit to get around. He noted that Arden Way serves a diverse mix of travelers, and these improvements will ensure that everyone, especially those who depend on alternative transportation, can move safely through the corridor.

One of the most notable improvements is the addition of a separated bikeway, the first of its kind in the county. Unlike traditional bike lanes, separated bike lanes provide physical separation from vehicle traffic, creating a much safer space for cyclists.

In addition to its safety enhancements, the project is expected to breathe new life into the corridor and encourage economic redevelopment. By transforming Arden Way into a walkable, multimodal boulevard, the improvements will support urban expansion by focusing on reinvestment into existing areas.

The Arden Way Complete Streets Project is officially underway, paving the path for a safer, more connected, and more vibrant future for the community.
