Description: Farm products are being hauled further for processing as local facilities close. This increases transport cost, which is compounded by rising fuel and maintenance costs. Moving products to market is also made difficult by limited river crossings and port access. Residents, workers and producers alike are impacted by increasing congestion from longer agriculture transport, as well as traffic that spills over from urban areas and more and more people commuting from rural areas to urban areas.
The Port of Sacramento ships rice and other commodities and has tremendous expansion potential once the channel is deepened, giving larger ships access.
