Rural-Urban Connections Strategy (RUCS)
Placer County Ag Tour
November 13, 2008
Description: Dan Macon founded Flying Mule Farm in 2001, where he raises grass-fed lamb, summer and fall vegetables and pastured poultry. With the average farmer topping 57 years of age, one of Macon's main concerns is identifying the next generation of farmers. Macon also sees local, state and federal regulations — both agricultural and health — as a major barrier for connecting consumers and producers. For example, lamb he raises in Auburn must take a two-hour round-trip to Dixon for USDA inspection before it can be sold at the Auburn Farmers' Market. Macon must also get a permit from the local Environmental Health Department to sell frozen meat at the market.
