Rural-Urban Connections Strategy (RUCS)
El Dorado Ag Tour
October 24, 2008
Description: David Girard Vineyards produces a few thousand cases of wine annually. Like most other wineries in the county, over 85 percent of their wine sales are direct to consumers. One of the challenges facing some wineries is the lack of access to water. In the south part of the county, 30 wineries operate only on well water and aren't competitive with Apple Hill because they are limited in the types of crops that can be grown. At the winery, participants also heard from Dale van Dam of Folsom Lake College's El Dorado Center, one of 10 mini-campuses in the Los Rios Community College District that brings job training closer to where people live. Nate Rangel, a whitewater outfitter, talked about the popularity of outdoor recreation and the challenges of regulations on his industry.
