Hmong Community Family Garden

Yuba County

This piece of land located in Yuba County is leased to three Hmong families. Thought of by locals as sub-prime land, these families have cultivated a rich and diverse cooperative garden.

Parents and children can both be seen working the land growing crops of snap peas, bok choy, strawberries, multiple herbs, many pepper and onion varieties, and garlic. The crops grown are used as a main source of fruits and vegetables for the families.

This garden is most significant as it represents a new culture emerging and thriving on what was believed to be weak soil.

The second generation of these families, although raised working in the garden, now are headed in different directions. Many of the children are graduates of the University of California system and other universities throughout the United States.
