Greene & Hemly
Virginia Hemly-Chaabra, Packing House Manager
Greene & Hemly is a family-owned farm that grows, packs, and markets pears and apples. Although the fruit packing lines are on the site of Josiah (and son George) Greene's original packing house, the current machinery bears little resemblance to the first equipment used in the mid-1800s. Today's packing lines take full advantage of the numerous advances in technology to deliver top-quality fruit in the variety of packages buyers require.
The farm's orchard management has traveled all over the world, gathering ideas and techniques for the continual improvement of the growing operation. Current innovations include pruning styles from South Africa, orchard systems from Italy, fruit varieties from Australia and New Zealand, irrigation technology from Israel, and biotechnology from the United States. Pear and apple varieties cur-rently grown have been carefully selected for their compatibility with the local climate. In addition to implementing the latest varieties and growing techniques, Greene & Hemly has been working to reduce the use of pesticides.
Today, the family's fifth and sixth generations own and operate the family business. Doug Hemly, the current president, is the great-great-grandson of Josiah Greene.
