Flying Mule Farm/Macon Agricultural Consulting
In 2001, the Macon Family founded Flying Mule Farm in Auburn. The small, diversified farm produces grass-fed lamb, summer and fall vegetables, pastured poultry, custom-milled lumber and firewood for local and regional markets. Dan Macon manages all of the farming operations, which include approximately 600 acres of grazing land, one acre of vegeta-bles, and scattered forest land. He also provides contract grazing and habitat management services utilizing sheep, goats and cattle.
Macon Agricultural Consulting provides consulting and project management services for a variety of clients, including the Nevada County Land Trust, the University of California and the Sierra Nevada Conservancy. Macon specializes in con-servation and agricultural economic development.
Macon has a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Managerial Economics from the University of California, Davis, and is also an alumnus of the California Agricultural Leadership Program, the Sierra Leadership Seminar and the Missouri Auction School. In 2003, Macon was recognized by the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences with its Award of Distinction for young alumni. He also received the Auburn Chamber of Commerce Friend of Agriculture Award and the California-Pacific Section of the Society for Range Management's Range Manager of the Year Award. He currently chairs the Placer County Ag Futures Project and sits on the boards of the Foothill Farmers' Market Association, and the Gold Country Sheep Producers Association.
Flying Mule Farm's products are available at Foothill Farmer's Markets in Placer and Nevada Counties, as well as local restaurants and specialty stores. Dan is a lifelong resident of the Sierra Nevada foothills. He and his wife Samia, a large-animal veterinarian, live north of Auburn with their two daughters.
