Chase National Kiwi Farms
Marysville
Chase National Kiwi Farms owners Tom Schultz and Del Chase planted their first kiwifruit vineyard in Yuba County in 1976 and currently farm over 200 acres of kiwifruit. This is a labor-intensive operation; with 32,000 individual vines that each need to be pruned and tied for fruit thinning in the spring, and then harvested in the fall. The owners farm all their vineyards organically and are the largest organic kiwifruit producers in California. Chase National Kiwi Farms is a vertically integrated operation.
Chase National grows the majority of their kiwifruit in the Marysville area, but they also farm 50 acres of kiwifruit in Madera. They have a complete packing shed and cold storage facility to handle over 500,000 trays of kiwifruit each season. The growing season begins in March and the farmers begin harvesting the crop in late September and finish in early No-vember. Marketing takes place from October to May.
Chase National Kiwi Farms packs all of its kiwifruit using an optical seizer, which it also uses to pack peaches, pluots, persimmons, and plums during the summer months. The company's cold storage facility is also designed to store peaches, pears, and strawberry plants during the kiwifruit off-season. Schultz and Chase have 10 full time employees and employ over 100 people during harvest.
