What is the Metropolitan Transportation Plan 2035?

The Sacramento Area Council of Governments and its partners are developing the Metropolitan Transportation Plan for 2035 (MTP2035).

The goal: define how $30 billion in transportation investments will support our growth over the next 23 years.

The challenge: identifying improvements for how we move, whether by car, transit, bike or foot.

The process: citizens will provide input at 16 community workshops throughout the six-county region. Maps and other planning tools will allow them to indicate preferences for transportation improvements. Several different plans will be developed based on community input. The public process will continue until the final MTP2035 is adopted in mid-2007.

Sacramento County:
Northern Sacramento Workshop Findings

Citizen planners at the May 25 workshop in South Natomas helped answer important questions:

What distances are they traveling most?

The most common scenario chosen was Medium distance (3-10 miles), with 10 tables choosing this map. Out of 16 tables, six chose a Short distance (up to 3 miles); none chose a Long scenario (more than 10 miles).

How do they prioritize their travel investments?

The most frequent investment suggestions included:

  • Neighborhood Shuttles throughout Sacramento County
  • Light rail to Sacramento International Airport
  • Bicycle and pedestrian bridges over freeways and roads in Natomas
  • Removal of select high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane extensions
  • Bus Rapid Transit incorporating bus routes to South Sacramento County

How can we support our travel options?

  • Expand paratransit services for the elderly and disabled
  • Improve road safety (improved shoulders, lighting, guardrails, crosswalks, signals, signage)
  • Improve local bus service (bus replacements, ongoing operations serving new and existing developments)
  • Improve road maintenance (repair potholes, pave surfaces)
  • Cleaner Air Programs ("Spare the Air" campaigns, replace dirty diesel engines)
