Most of the meeting consisted of a presentation by Rob Leonard and John Febbo from the Sacramento County Airport System. While some cargo moves at every airport in the region, the majority of it all moves through either Sacramento International Airport or Mather Field. FedEx currently operates one plane per day between Sacramento (International) and its Memphis hub, but has plans to operate two planes every day starting later this year. FedEx also operates some smaller feeder aircraft out of Sacramento to places in northern California that are more than 100 miles away. Communities located less than 100 miles from Sacramento are served by truck. Groundbreaking for the new terminal B facility at Sacramento International Airport is scheduled for July 2008, and construction is expected to last about 2 years. The integrated carriers operating out of Mather Field include UPS and DHL. UPS operates three flights each day to their hubs in Louisville, Rockford and Ontario. DHL operates two flights each day to their facilities in Wilmington and Riverside. Much like FedEx, both carriers also operate smaller feeder aircraft, as well as trucks. One common issue to both airports is the need for carefully regulated land uses adjacent to the airports to ensure that conflicts do not arise and that the ability of those facilities to operate in the future is not put in jeopardy by poor land use decisions. Update on Regional Goods Movement Study. SACOG received eight proposals in response to the RFP for Phase 1 of the Regional Goods Movement Study. A team of reviewers from SACOG and Caltrans rated the proposals. Two of the highest ranking proposals, from Cambridge Systematics and the Tioga Groups, were selected for oral interviews. The team from the Tioga Group was ultimately chosen. Final award of the contract is pending SACOG Board action on March 16. Other Matters. There was some discussion about the importance of having rail links to serve air cargo facilities for use by agricultural shipments. Collette Armao of Caltrans Aeronautics mentioned that a study is underway to examine the potential of using BART for some goods movement in the Bay Area.
