Census 2000

Important Message Regarding Census 2000 Race/Ethnicity Data

When the data are"published," they will mainly be on CDs. There will be very few data available in the traditional report formats. Some map products will come on DVD instead of CD. Additionally, the data will be available at the Census Bureau's website via American FactFinder. (http://factfinder.census.gov)

Data Available

PL-94-171 - Redistricting

Race/Ethnicity data are available for cities, counties, census tracts and blocks. Those are the reapportionment data that everyone will use to redistrict.

Files for SACOG's six-county area are currently available for Block Level data, Census Tract, Census Tract split by Place, and by Place. There are also files that provide Place Names and Place Codes.

Block Level data for selected counties outside our region are also available. A zipped file for the entire state is available. Maps for the areas outside our region are not available from SACOG. Please contact the U.S. Census Bureau to obtain these maps.

Short Form Data

Data for Counties and Places are available as PDF Files.

Long Form Data

Data from the long form can be obtained by using the Census Bureau's web-based tool, American Factfinder at http://factfinder.census.gov. For help using this site, contact the InfoCenter.

Maps

The SACOG Mapping Center has produced Census Tract Outline Maps and Block Boundary Maps. They can be viewed online and are available for purchase.

Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) Data

The CTPP is a special tabulation of the Census data sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). It includes many variables relevant to those studying commute patterns. CTPP has three component data sets:

  • Part 1: place of residence
  • Part 2: place of employment
  • Part 3: flows

For more information, contact the InfoCenter or visit http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/ctpp/.

Geography Changes

There are many geographic area changes which have taken place since the 1990 census. Blocks have been renumbered. Block Groups and census tracts have been split. A Tract Correspondence Table showing 1990 tracts and how they were split is available.

Please note that the cities of Elk Grove and Rancho Cordova were incorporated after the 2000 Census was conducted. The census includes data for Census Designated Places named "Elk Grove CDP" and "Rancho Cordova CDP." However, the geographic boundaries of those CDPs do not match the incorporated city boundaries for either city. For special tabulations using the incorporated city boundaries, please contact the InfoCenter.

Additional Census Data

The SACOG Information Center has data from the 1980,1990, and 2000 census. There is an extensive amount of information available including race/ethnicity, education, income, and detailed housing unit information. Information is available by county, city, census tract, and block group.

The Census Bureau's web site has an enormous amount of information.

Use the American FactFinder for information from the 1990 and 2000 Censuses. This is a user friendly way to obtain census data.

The Census Bureau's site contains more than just Census Data. To see what else is available check out Subjects A - Z.

If you need help using the Census Bureau's site, feel free to send the SACOG Information Center a question or give us a call.
