SACOG Honors Region's Best at Awards Ceremony

SACRAMENTO - The Sacramento Area Council of Governments today honored outstanding regional efforts in transportation, smart-growth planning and air quality as part of the 2005 SACOG Salutes! Regional Awards Program.

The high-profile awards were presented to individuals and organizations whose achievements and innovations made a significant difference in the Sacramento region in 2005.

"This has been a year of impressive projects in the Sacramento region. Many of these recipients compliment the Blueprint Project, which promotes smart-growth principles," SACOG Chair Ted Gaines said. "We are pleased by the hard work and innovation each winner has shown."

The 2005 Regional Award winners are as follows:

Award Winner Reason for Award
Blueprint Excellence Award Smart Choices for Roseville For implementing smart-growth principles and demonstrating the benefits of compact growth and walkable communities.
Regional Project of the Year Light Rail Extension to Folsom For creating an easy downtown commute, reducing congestion on Highway 50, and improving the region's air quality.
Regional Business of the Year SKK Developments For creating mixed-income housing and urban infill projects with broad-based community support.
Regional Citizen of the Year Members of the Sacramento Transportation Air Quality Collaborative For devoting five years to developing a long-range and comprehensive strategy for improving transportation and air quality.
Regional Agency of the Year Unitrans For operating one of the most productive and lowest cost transit systems in the nation.
Special Recognition Douglas/I-80 Interchange For a coordinated effort by Roseville, Caltrans and the Placer County Transportation Planning Agency that will lead to a safer and more efficient interchange.
Special Recognition Elizabeth Kemper For helping to create viable, living communities that adhere to the principles of smart growth.
