SACRAMENTO - The Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) watched closely as Congress passed SAFETEA LU (Safe Accountable Flexible and Efficient Transportation Equity Act Legacy for Users) today, which will deliver hundreds of millions in transportation projects and air quality improvements in the six-county Sacramento region.

"Nearly all of our top priorities could receive some funding by this bill, which is good for the region and each of our local jurisdictions," said SACOG Board Chair and Placer County Supervisor Ted Gaines. "Our local elected officials were resolute in lobbying through group efforts during the Sacramento Metro Chamber Cap-to-Cap trip in March and independent meetings urging our congressional delegation to support TEA LU. The region owes a great deal of gratitude to our entire congressional delegation for taking the charge to ensure significant improvements to our transportation network."

Each of the 22 cities and six counties in the Sacramento region worked collaboratively with the Sacramento congressional delegation including Congresswoman Doris Matsui, Congressman John Doolittle, Congressman Dan Lungren, Congressman Mike Thompson, Congressman Wally Herger, Senator Barbara Boxer and Senator Diane Feinstein to support a list of high priority regional projects. The region will receive $98 million in earmarks toward 10 of the 12 regional priority projects, proving collaboration among jurisdictions can result in broad benefits. The region will also received $34.2 million in earmarks for 12 local projects.
