SACRAMENTO (January 24) - The Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) today announced a promotion aimed at showcasing the most commuter-friendly workplaces in the Sacramento region. The effort, part of a national campaign created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, will highlight local employers that offer outstanding commuter benefits such as employer-provided transit passes, vanpool subsidies, telework programs, bike commuter facilities and carpool support. On April 21, SACOG and other organizations will roll out a list of employers deemed "Sacramento Region's Best Workplaces for Commuters." The list, a regional "Who's Who" among environmentally aware and employee-friendly organizations, is updated and issued annually. Employers qualify for the list by meeting national standards for excellence in commuter benefits programs. In exchange for meeting the standards, employers receive public recognition and support and guidance to maintain their programs. "As the region's primary transportation planning agency, SACOG is always looking for ways to promote alternatives to drive-alone commuting," SACOG Executive Director Mike McKeever said. "This effort gives us an opportunity to recognize employers that are providing real options for their employees and encouraging others to do the same." McKeever noted that providing commuter benefits helps employers reduce parking expenses, lessen traffic congestion, improve employee recruitment and retention, and minimize environmental impacts associated with traditional single-occupant vehicle trips. To participate, employers must apply to EPA by March 10 using a simple online form. Further information is available at www.bwc.gov. -END- |
