SACOG/Caltrans Launch
One-Stop Source for Traveler Information
Traffic, Transit, Car/Vanpool, Bicycling Information
Available on Region's New 511 System
What:
The Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) in collaboration
with Caltrans will hold a news conference to launch the region's
new traveler information service - 511 - providing
travel information for drivers, transit riders, carpoolers,
vanpoolers and more throughout the region. The free service
is available on the phone by dialing 511 or online at www.sacregion511.org.
The news conference will feature the unveiling of 511 road
signs, a ceremonial first call to the 511 phone service, and
opportunity to interact with the 511 Web portal and online
carpool/vanpool ride-matching tool.

Why:
The Federal Communications Commission in 2000 granted exclusive
use of 511-phone number to state and local transportation departments
to distribute traveler information. The Sacramento region is
the second major metropolitan area in California to implement
the 511 service.
